List of community resources

September is Suicide Prevention Month

Dear Yakima School District Families and Staff,

The Yakima School District cares deeply about the health and safety of our students. This month, we are focusing on suicide prevention. Our goal is to make it easier for students and families to talk about mental health and to know where to find help.

Warning Signs of a Crisis

Watch for these signs that someone may be in crisis:

  • Talking about wanting to die or feeling hopeless.

  • Pulling away from friends, family, or activities they used to enjoy.

  • Big changes in sleeping or eating habits.

  • Extreme mood swings or increased use of alcohol or drugs.

  • Giving away belongings or saying goodbye.

How to Get Help

  • Talk to someone you trust like a friend, family member, or school staff member. Some YSD staff have extra training in suicide prevention and can connect students with help.

  • Call 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. It’s free, confidential, and available 24/7.

  • Call the Yakima County Crisis Line: 1-888-544-9986 (also on the back of every staff and student ID badge).

  • Text 741741 to connect with a trained counselor. You can text about suicide or any situation where you feel overwhelmed.

  • Chat online at https://www.crisistextline.org/.

Other Resources

This year, we are working with community partners on the Never a Bother Campaign. The message is simple: asking for help is never a burden. Youth are reminded that they can always reach out to a friend, a trusted adult, or call 988. Partners in this effort include the Yakima Police Department, ESD 105, Safe Yakima Valley, other local schools, and local police departments. Please remember that help is always available through our schools and community partners. Together, we can prevent suicide and support one another.

Sincerely,
Student Services
Yakima School District
