YSD Honors MLK Jr.’s Legacy
The Yakima community joined our district in the 40th Annual Peace Walk to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
While schools were closed on Monday, January 20 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the community was invited to join Yakima School District for our 40th Annual Peace Walk.
Over 100 staff members, students, families, and community members gathered on MLK Jr. Boulevard and journeyed to the Yakima Convention Center, where participants celebrated the great impact of Dr. King.
Superintendent Greene gave an inspiring keynote speech, honoring the legacy of Dr. King and encouraging the Yakima community to embody his principles of justice, equity, and love through action. Dr. Greene reflected on the significance of places named after Dr. King in Yakima–a school, a street, and a park–emphasizing their role as commitments to education, progress, and community.
“Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary stands as a testament to the promise of education,” Dr. Greene shared. “To honor Dr. King’s name in this space, we must ensure that every child, regardless of their background, has access to the tools they need to succeed.”
The Peace Walk served as a powerful reminder that his dream lives on – not just in the names of schools and streets, but in the actions of our community. Thank you to everyone who participated in this momentous event!
