Yakima School District Students Receive Unleashed Awards

Students from Eisenhower and Davis High Schools recognized in Unleashed Awards for outstanding work.

Students from across Yakima Valley schools, including Yakima School District’s Davis and Eisenhower High Schools, earned recognition for their outstanding work in writing and photography at the annual Unleashed Awards ceremony held in late July.

Davis High School

Theron Clements, now a junior, made an impressive mark, earning multiple honors:
  • Rookie of the Year Runner-Up: Acknowledged for writing many high-caliber articles since starting with Unleashed in March 2025
  • Best Science Story and Excellence in Science Writing: Honored for his compelling piece about Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, which explored the institution's 50-year legacy in cancer research and disease prevention
  • Best Group Feature (shared award): For his entry on the poem "In the Past" as part of "The Unleashed Spring Poetry Review"
Eisenhower High School

Annaka Yockey, a senior, was honored with four wins spanning multiple categories:
  • Year's Best Photo: Captured a stunning image of singer Olivia Rodrigo performing at the Moda Center for her August 2024 concert review about fulfilling a personal dream
  • Best Portrait Photo: Photographed Eisenhower senior softball standout Zoe Niblett for a June 2025 feature celebrating the athlete's leadership and influence on her teammates
  • Best Editorial: Penned a powerful open letter to Vice President Kamala Harris in January 2025, reflecting on progress and the work still ahead
  • Best Movie Review: Praised the animated sequel "Inside Out 2" in a July 2024 review, highlighting its positive messaging
Ellie Suhm, a senior, received recognition for Best Food Review with her March 2025 article and photo package recommending The Early Bird, an Ellensburg breakfast spot she deemed worthy of the morning drive.

Clara Zeilman, also a senior, earned two awards:
  • Best Play Preview: Covered Eisenhower High School's production of "The Music Man" in March 2025
  • Best Group Feature (shared award): Analyzed Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" for "The Unleashed Spring Poetry Review"
Jordan Hartmann, a senior who joined Unleashed for the first time this year, won two awards:
  • Best TV Review: Examined how Netflix's "Arcane: League of Legends" succeeded through its distinctive visual style and soundtrack in a December 2024 piece
  • Best Staff Bio: Crafted a memorable self-introduction for the October 2024 "Rookies" feature showcasing new program members
Anthony Douthit, now an Ike graduate, won Best Game Review for his May 2025 article exploring the enduring appeal of Minecraft beyond its titular activities.

The impressive showing by Yakima School District students at the Unleashed Awards demonstrates the depth of talent and passion within our community.
 
Their willingness to explore diverse subjects like cancer research, politics, gaming culture, or musicals shows both curiosity and confidence to share their perspectives with the world.
