The Yakima School District Board of Directors has been named a 2025 Board of Distinction by WSSDA.

The Yakima School District Board of Directors has been named a 2025 Board of Distinction by the Washington State School Directors' Association (WSSDA). The District has received this honor four times since 2021.

The award celebrates school boards that demonstrate exceptional leadership, a strong commitment to equity, and clear focus on student success. For Yakima, the honor underscores the board's commitment to advocating for equitable funding and equal opportunities for all students across Washington State.

WSSDA's review team specifically praised Yakima's approach to "elevating legislative advocacy as your primary equity strategy." The board has consistently engaged with state lawmakers, raised public awareness, and worked to influence policy that impacts students throughout the region. Their efforts with House Bill 2049, advocating for levy equalization and Local Effort Assistance (LEA) were recognized as exemplary models for other districts to follow.

"We're deeply honored by this recognition," said Board President Ryan Beckett. "This award reflects our board's unwavering commitment to ensuring every child in Yakima—regardless of zip code—has equitable access to the resources and opportunities they deserve."

This latest achievement adds to an impressive track record of recognition. The district currently holds the title of Washington State's Large School District Board of the Year, WSSDA's highest honor. In 2023, the board also received national recognition with a Magna Silver Award from the National School Boards Association for its innovative student voice initiative.

Superintendent Dr. Trevor Greene emphasized that the award reflects collaboration across the entire district community. "This award is a tribute to the partnership between our board, staff, families, and community," Greene said. "By prioritizing legislative advocacy, Yakima is helping lead the charge for fair funding and educational justice in Washington State."

The recognition extends beyond the board members themselves. In his message to district staff, Dr. Greene made clear that this honor belongs to everyone who contributes to student success, from teachers and support staff to bus drivers and administrators.

The Yakima School District Board of Directors will be formally recognized at WSSDA's Annual Conference on November 20, 2025.

The 2025 Board of Distinction honor best represents Goal 3: Equitable Opportunity to Achieve Core Mastery and Critical Thinking, illustrating that Yakima’s legislative advocacy is a direct expression of its commitment to equity, opportunity, and community-driven student success. To learn more about our strategic plan, visit ysd7.org/strategicplan.
