Stanton Students Transform Courtyard Through Collaboration

What was once an empty courtyard has become a vibrant gathering place thanks to the creativity, leadership and dedication of Stanton Academy students.

 

As part of a schoolwide project-based learning (PBL) initiative, every classroom at Stanton Academy played a role in transforming the outdoor space into an inviting environment designed by students, for students. From developing the initial vision and selecting plants to designing and painting a colorful mural, building benches, coordinating the project and planning the unveiling event, students led every step of the process.

The courtyard transformation demonstrates the power of authentic, hands-on learning. Students worked together to solve real-world challenges, make meaningful decisions and create a lasting improvement for their school community. Along the way, they strengthened skills in collaboration, communication, leadership and problem-solving while taking ownership of a space they can now proudly call their own.

"The courtyard transformation is far more than just a physical renovation. It represents what is possible when students are empowered to lead, collaborate and shape their own learning experiences," said Stanton Principal Natalie Riley. "Every classroom contributed to this project, and every student left their mark on a space that reflects the creativity and pride of our school community."

The completed courtyard now offers students a welcoming place to connect, recharge and build community, featuring expanded seating, new landscaping, vibrant artwork and spaces for recreation. The project reflects Stanton Academy's commitment to student voice and project-based learning, where meaningful experiences help prepare students for success both in school and beyond.

Stanton Academy extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Yakima Schools Foundation for

celebrating this milestone and supporting student-centered learning. The school also thanks Yakima Rotary Club, Technology Access Foundation (TAF), PPG Paint, Home Depot, Yakima Printing Co., Yakima Tent and Awning, Young Life, Cairnspring Mills, the Yakima School District Maintenance Department, and the many community members and student fundraisers whose generosity of time, expertise and resources helped bring the students' vision to life.

The courtyard stands as a lasting reminder of what students can accomplish when they are trusted to lead, supported by their community and empowered to turn their ideas into reality.
