Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following those expectations is an important part of the Yakima School District's initiative for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports or PBIS.
The purpose of school and district-wide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.
Each school has focused on three to five behavioral expectations that are positively stated and easy to remember. In other words, rather than telling students what not to do/be, the school will focus on the preferred behaviors/characteristics.
Consistency from class to class and adult to adult is very important for successful implementation of school and district-wide PBIS thus creating a climate that is positive, predictable, and safe.
The following Character Education words are some of the PBIS behavioral expectations that were developed by our students as their own expectations for their character and behavior.
