• Principal’s Message

    Message from the Principals,

We recently held our first Parent Leadership Group meeting and had a good turnout. We would like to add more people to this group.

We will continue with our PISA nights this year. If you didn’t join us last year, PISA stands for Parents Increasing Student Achievement. We are empowering parents to help their student with math, reading, writing, and behavior at home. These nights are very informative and you’ll go home with ideas and materials you can use with your students to increase their success at school!

We will also be offering library nights, language nights, and other grade level events that you won’t want to miss. Be sure to check your child’s backpack each Wednesday for their communication folder. We will send home information regarding these upcoming events through the communication folder and our monthly newsletter. I would also like to start email communication with parents. If you would like to get these monthly communications, please email me at voorhees.amanda@yakimaschools.org and let me know you would like to be added to the email list.

Another opportunity for parents is to sit in on our Instructional Leadership Team meetings. We are looking for parents who would like to join us once or twice this year and find out about all the “behind the scenes” work that is happening at school to increase student achievement. If you are interested in joining us, we meet twice a month on Wednesdays from 3:45-4:45 at the school. Please contact Irma Mercado for more information at 573-1464.

After School Enrichment Program: New this year is our after school program. For the month of October we have over 70 students signed up to participate. Registration for November is closed but registration for December will open last week of November. Check your child’s backpack on the last wednesdayof the month for the registration form. The program runs from 3:15-4:30. Students will be provided with a snack, they will have time to work on homework/classwork with direct access to staff assistance. For the last 30 minutes students will participate in a STEAM or Physical Activity. If you would like to volunteer to help with this program please contact Irma Mercado at 573-1464.

McKinley Events: This year the parent involvement team is keeping our commitment to offer a variety of both fun and educational events for our families to participate in. Each month families will be invited to an evening event that will be both fun for kids and educational for parents. If you were able to join us for Open House you should have received your McKinley Events Magnet. If you haven’t received one please see Lupe in the office for your magnet.

Communication Folders: Each Wednesday students will bring home all the communication from school for the week in this folder. Please look for this folder in your child’s backpack on Wednesdays and return it to school empty the next day.

Homework packet: Each Monday your K-5th grade student will bring home their homework packet. Each day there will be a different set of tasks they must complete which includes reading, math, and spelling. Please initial the front page daily indicating that students have completed the work and on Fridays, students will bring the front page of their packet back to their teacher.

We are looking forward to partnering with you this year.

    Sincerely,

    Amanda Voorhees, Principal               509-573-1401

    Cherie Carroll, Assistant Principal        509-573-1420
