Notice of Battery Issue with Hotspot Devices

Verizon is releasing a software update to reduce the potential for battery related issues. If your device is currently turned off, please turn it on so that the Ellipsis Jetpack can receive two (2) over-the-air, automatic software updates that will (a) enable the device’s identifying number to be viewed on its scrolling screen to help facilitate its exchange and (b) prevent the device from charging while the device is plugged in and powered on. You will know the software update has been applied when you see the device’s identifying number scrolling across its screen. After the software update is applied, users should leave the device powered on while it is plugged in. When not in use, the device should be turned off, unplugged from its power source, and securely stored.

We have identified an issue with a small number (less than .001%) of Verizon hotspot devices used for distance learning. The issue is specific to Verizon Ellipsis Jetpack models MHS900L and MHS900LS (image below). These hotspots can significantly overheat and cause heat-related damage.

    Please note:

    • Elementary students that received a laptop during the spring closure will use that as their 1:1 laptop for the 2020-21 school year; they do not need to exchange it for a different one.

    • High school and middle school students that checked out a laptop during the spring closure must return that laptop and pick up a 1:1 laptop.

    • A student or parent must be present at the time of pick-up. Health and safety are our primary concerns; visitors will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms before entering YSD buildings. Additionally, masks and social distancing will be required and monitored.

    • You may contact the student tech support desk with any questions regarding 1:1 laptops. View student tech support info

Internet Access

  • YSD Hotspots

    ** Hotspot Devices Available **

YSD families of students who are eligible for free and reduced-price meals and do not currently have broadband access at home may borrow a mobile wi-fi hotspot from the District free of charge. Eligible families needing a wi-fi hotspot device may pick one up at the laptop distribution locations.

The recent update from Verizon allows the district to better align hotspot usage to educational needs. Audits of hotspot performance revealed that many students were being throttled due to excessive data usage outside of instructional requirements or needs. District hotspots will no longer be able to connect to commercial video streaming services (Hulu, Netflix, etc) by any device.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are 1:1 laptops?

Posted by Technology Services on 7/8/2020

With one to one (1:1) laptops, every student has his or her own district assigned laptop for use at home and at school. The laptop will stay with the student through the entirety of the school year.

  • Are all students required to check-out a 1:1 laptop?

Posted by Technology Services on 7/8/2020

It is not mandatory, as a parent can opt them out of the program, but we strongly encourage students to check out a laptop. All software needed to participate in YSD classes will be licensed to district devices. We cannot extend this licensing to personal devices and also cannot guarantee compatibility with district curriculum on a personal device.
