Washington Apple Crunch October 7th!
Posted by Melissa Lim on 10/12/2020Yakima School District participated for the first time in the state wide "Taste Washington Day," Washington Apple Crunch event on Wednesday, October 7th. The students who picked up meals received a fun handout sheet with apple facts, as well as a Washington grown apple so they could participate in the state wide celebration by biting into their apple with a CRUNCH! Our food service staff at Davis High school decided to join in themselves and are pictured below along with other food service staff throughout our differnt sites.
Did you know Washington State produces more apples than any other state in the United States? Harvest of these apples begins in August and goes through November and Yakima County is the leading county in Washington for apple production! On top of being an important economic part of the Yakima valley, apples also contribute some stellar nutrition! Apples contain antioxidants which help keep your cells healthy, vitamin c which can boost your immune system, and soluble fiber which helps lower cholesterol. Now there's something to celebrate, and if you ever get a chance to meet the growers and farmers of the next apple you take a bite of, remember to thank them for supplying you with a local, nutrition packed, delicious treat! Shout out to the Yakima Valley for being a noteworthy agricultural leader in our nation and for the Yakima School District featuring local produce.
