  • Hello, MLK families. We, the MLK staff cannot express enough how much we care and miss your children. Please be assured that we are working diligently to develop engaging and equitable learning opportunities for all students. Please be patient with us as we learn how to work with your child without actually having them in our classrooms. To support your child in meeting grade-level expectations, please encourage him/her to participate in all learning opportunities provided by his/her teacher. Thank you for supporting your child with his/her learning during this school closure.

Posted by Ashley LaRiviere on 10/30/2020
The Yakima School District would like to thank and honor our principals for their visionary leadership and tireless pursuit of success for each student.

Did you know that Principal Maria Lucero knows how to play the saxophone? She started playing the saxophone in elementary school. Her favorite song to play was Hang on Sloopy by the McCoys.

Did you know that Assistant Principal Sydney John likes to wear crazy socks every day at work? Students love to see what socks he's wearing. It's a great way to build relationships with students.

  • Mr. John at MLK does daily announcements

Posted by Anne Chapma on 10/14/2020

Syd John is the assistant principal at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary.

Every day he records a video announcement to keep the kids informed about

    important things they should know.

The students at MLK know that Mr. John likes to wear interesting or crazy socks every day.

Each day the first thing he does on the announcement is show off his socks.

It is a good thing that Mr. John is flexible and has good balance.

Check out the pictures to see why.

  • Washington Apple Crunch October 7th!

Posted by Melissa Lim on 10/12/2020

Yakima School District participated for the first time in the state wide "Taste Washington Day," Washington Apple Crunch event on Wednesday, October 7th. The students who picked up meals received a fun handout sheet with apple facts, as well as a Washington grown apple so they could participate in the state wide celebration by biting into their apple with a CRUNCH! Our food service staff at Davis High school decided to join in themselves and are pictured below along with other food service staff throughout our differnt sites.

Did you know Washington State produces more apples than any other state in the United States? Harvest of these apples begins in August and goes through November and Yakima County is the leading county in Washington for apple production! On top of being an important economic part of the Yakima valley, apples also contribute some stellar nutrition! Apples contain antioxidants which help keep your cells healthy, vitamin c which can boost your immune system, and soluble fiber which helps lower cholesterol. Now there's something to celebrate, and if you ever get a chance to meet the growers and farmers of the next apple you take a bite of, remember to thank them for supplying you with a local, nutrition packed, delicious treat! Shout out to the Yakima Valley for being a noteworthy agricultural leader in our nation and for the Yakima School District featuring local produce.

  • EBT Funds Available to All YSD Students

Posted by YSD Food Services on 7/6/2020

Because COVID-19 closed our schools, your children are eligible for food assistance, called Pandemic EBT (P-EBT): Emergency School Meals Program.

P-EBT provides families with funds to make up for some of the cost of meals while school was closed. This benefit is for Washington children in grades K-12 who receive free or reduced-price school meals. These benefits will be on an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card which is used like a debit card to buy groceries. Because all YSD students receive free breakfast and lunch, all YSD students are eligible regardless of income. If you do not already receive benefits, you will need to apply on or after June 30.  If you receive food assistance benefits already, the money will appear on your EBT on June 30.

Update 7/6/20: We have been in contact with OSPI last week and they said that DSHS had the incorrect student list for Yakima School District which is why they turned down some parents; they are updating with the correct list which will show any student enrolled in Yakima School District that was grade K-12 in the school year 2019-2020 as eligible for PEBT.

If you were denied, go to WashingtonConnections.org and apply again and see if their list has been updated. You can inform them Yakima is a CEP district.
